North Halifax Taekwondo (NHTKD) was opened by Neil Capper on the 28th April 2010 at Forest Cottage, Cousin Lane, Halifax. Origonally, Neil was a member of the T.A.G.B. (Taekwondo Association of Great Britain) under which he had trained for a number of years before achieving his Black Belt in 2008. Neil then went on to attend the Umpires and Referee courses to become a qualified tournament official and then he attended both Parts 1 and 2 of the T.A.G.B. instructors course in Bristol at the T.A.G.B. academy
In 2012, Neil started to be come disillusioned with the T.A.G.B. He started to notice discrepancies within the organisation and the way it was run. He also found the way some of the Senior Grades treated the lower grades to be unpleasant.
Eventually, Neil decided he could no longer stay with either the T.A.G.B. or his instructor because of what he could see happening. He was very consious that he wanted to be part of a growing organisation, and that the belts of his students would still be recognised.
It was at this time that he heard that undefeated World Champion Mr Roger Lawrence had also left the T.A.G.B. for very similar reasons. Mr Lawrence had been instumental in helping Neil fill gaps in his training before he had attended his Black Belt Grading, gaps which were left by his instructor. Neil made contact with Mr Lawrence and arrangements were made for several meetings. At the end of these meetings, Neil left the T.A.G.B. and joined the Great Britain Taekwondo Federation (G.B.T.F.). Since this day, Neil has never looked back. With a growing association which is dedicated to the students, friendly, approachable and open instructors, detailed syllabus and teachings which follow those of the Taekwondo as designed by Master C K Choi and Maj Gen Choi Hong Hi he has found the association which he feels fits N.H.T.K.D. exactly.
Over time, the club grew in size and eventually, it became apparent that the training venue at Forrest Cottage was too small for the number of students. Neil started to look for a new location and found the perfect venue just down the road at the Threeways Centre, Nursery Lane, Halifax. The club changed location in January 2014 to the bigger and better facilities. It was then that the club achieved its first major success in a competition when Courtney Kelly won gold medal in the under 14's Blue Belt division of the United kingdom All Styles Competiton.
From then on, there was no stopping the club, with an avaerage of 300 medals per year being won in various competitions up and down the country. With individuals such as Kallum Rhodes constantly taking 3 and 4 Gold medals per competition, Chloe Rutherford winning 18 medals in 16 months, and the numerous other students, too numerous to mention individually, this is set to continue for a very long time
In 2017 Neil decided to extend the club and started looking for a new and suitable location. ventually he found a location in Brighouse and started teaching at Waring Green Community Centre in January 2018. The club quickly grew due to the way the teaching was delivered, the relaxed nature of the training and the attention to details given by the instructors resulting in recognition for the success by the Local Member of Parliment when both the club and a student received a personal message congratulating them on recent successes. Due to the size of the club, Neil decided it was time to find a bigger location and decided to move the club to Lightcliffe academy in August 2020.
In March 2020 the club was forced to move location when Calderdale Council closed the Threeways Sports Centre, a Charity run by volunteers, without warning. This closure disrupted many sporting groups in the North Halifax area. To enable training to continue, the club moved locations to North Halifax Grammer School. This move proved to be a good choice, with the location and club name more closley representing the area it was origonally intended to help.
At North Halifax Taekwondo, we teach and train under the ITF (International Taekwondo Federation) style of Taekwondo. You can learn more about the difference between ITF and WTF (World Taekwondo Federation) styles here
